Journal of Animal and Natural Resource Law

Students of Michigan State University College of Law

The Journal of Animal Law seeks to explore the legal and public policy issues surrounding animals at all levels of government: local, state, national, comparative national and international. All perspectives are welcome. The Journal will be web published in its entirety, but hard print copy shall also be available.

I. Article Submission Guidelines

The Journal of Animal Law is currently reviewing papers for Volume 10, which is scheduled for publication in the late spring of 2014.   The Journal of Animal law carefully considers all manuscripts that it receives.   We will never reject an article for lack of space; rather, we will hold it over for consideration in the next volume.

Submissions will be considered year-round, but the deadline for acceptance for the ninth volume will be December 1, 2013. Articles are accepted on a rolling basis, so the volume may be full by that time. Submissions will be reviewed first by at least members of the Journal of Animal Law Editorial Board, including the Editor-in-Chief, and then by the peer-review committee of law professor and writers, to assure quality of scholarship.

Electronic copies of articles should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief at msujanrl@gmail.com.  Articles of any length will be considered, but the Journal aims to include several articles consisting of a minimum of thirty pages.   We request that authors use endnotes rather than footnotes, which should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.

Please include your name, article title, contact information (address, phone numbers, and email address), affiliation, and biographical information with each submission.

II. Membership on the Staff of the Journal

The Journal membership currently consists of students from the Michigan State University College of Law who have completed their first year of law school.   However, membership is open to students from other ABA law schools who have completed the equivalent of their first year of law school. They may participate in every capacity except for that of Editor-in-Chief.

Prospective members should apply during the second semester of their first year of law school, by submitting a personal statement detailing the student’s interest in animal law, how that interest would be furthered by participating in the Journal.   Prospective members should also submit a writing sample that should not exceed 10 pages in length.

The Editorial Board will select those students whose personal statements and writing samples demonstrate the prospective members’ interest in animal law as well as excellent writing abilities for an interview.   The interviewing process will include at least one member of the Editorial board, and will be conducted in person for students attending Michigan State University College of Law or via telephone, for students residing in other states.
