| Decreto Supremo 004-2019-MC, 2019 - Peru | Esta ley tiene como objetivo regular los criterios para evaluar si un evento público puede ser considerado, o "califica", como evento cultural no deportivo. Entre los eventos que pueden entrar en esta categoría se encuentran, entre otros, la ópera, el ballet, el teatro y el circo. La ley modifica la Ley 30870, que establecía los criterios para evaluar si un espectáculo puede considerarse un acontecimiento cultural no deportivo. En lo que respecta específicamente a el derecho animal, la ley establece que los mensajes y las acciones del evento no deben incitar al odio o la violencia contra los animales u otros seres vivos no humanos. |

| Decision EXP. N.° 2620-2003-HC/TC - Peru | In this case, the appellant filed a habeas corpus action against a magistrate for threatening to arrest him for displaying political disfavor using a pet rat in a cage. The magistrate ordered the police to seize the rat, implying a threat to the animal. The first court ruled against the appellant, stating his actions offended the magistrate's dignity and that the magistrate was protecting his reputation. The appellate court agreed, noting the difference between free expression and offending honor, and also declared the complaint unfounded. |
| Decision No. 11, 2024 - Zorro Run Run (Peru) | In this case, the city of Lima was keeping a wild Andean fox, Run Run, in a zoo, after he had been seen around neighborhoods in the area. Biological welfare groups, as well as civilians, were upset to hear about Run Run’s poor treatment and filed a suit against the city for his release. The court discussed ideas of one's duty to respect nature, national character and biodiversity, and natural preservation. In this landmark decision, Peru granted Run Run his autonomous rights. |

This paper will discuss the emergence of the concept of the “multispecies family” in Latin American courts. The paper begins first by taking a broad overview of animal law in Latin America, giving a brief understanding of the fundamental information that gave rise to the concept of the recognition of the multispecies family. It then covers the basis of a multispecies family and its ties to both national and universal human rights. This paper then discusses and analyzes a compilation of some of the most landmark cases regarding multispecies families and their importance to animal welfare, natural protection, and human rights. It then provides a brief overview of several other landmark cases for further reading. Finally, it concludes with closing remarks regarding the overall impact of multispecies families’ legal recognition and its impact on up-and-coming animal law, as well as provides several sources for further information. |
